Niki Colomont’s Biography
Niki Colomont is a Belgian-based wildlife photographer. He began photographing squirrels about five years ago as part of an effort to find peace within himself. As a 4-year-old kid living in Rwanda, Colomont and his 9-year-old sister directly experienced child trauma during the genocide in his country. Their father was killed during the Rwanda civil war that claimed the lives of over 700,000 people.
With both father and mother dead, Colomont and his sister were put up for adoption by their aunt, who was their guardian. Colomont and his sister eventually made it to Belgium. To Colomont’s dismay, his sister suddenly died at 35. To deal with past and present trauma, he took photography.
Photographing red squirrels is giving him peace.
Many of the photographs in his photography project on squirrels admiring themselves in water are from his girlfriend’s grandmother’s garden. Some are from different locations in the village of Diepenbeek where he lives. “I usually photograph squirrels in creative and entertaining poses to brighten up people’s day,” he said. A self-taught photographer, Colomont continues to search for peace even as he brings peace to others.
