Japanese artist Masayoshi Matsumoto is an innovative artist who explores ordinary balloons to create incredible animal balloon sculptures. He uses dozens of balloon colors and assorted shapes to create sculptures that have captivated many in the art world.

Matsumoto’s balloon sculptures are not the regular balloon animals and crowns twisted for kids at parties and carnivals. He has elevated the craft to an art form. Matsumoto’s sculptures include birds, insects, scaly lizards, giant isopods, baboons, and mystical creatures.

Balloon Decorations of Animals and Insects

At only 25, Matsumoto has inserted himself into the global art discourse, engendering discussions on how everyday material can be used to create art. He follows in the path of Marcel Duchamp and other famous artists who use everyday materials to create important artworks. In the hand of  Matsumoto, balloons become an important medium to create animal sculptures. The sculptures are intricate and they all articulate the characteristics of the animals represented.

Matsumoto’s animals and insect balloon sculptures are imaginative and detailed. No animal is off-limit. The artist has perfected his art to the point that many of his sculptures are intricately woven to perfection. One of my favorites is Iguana. Matsumoto combines blue, green, and purple color balloons to create a beautiful Iguana sculpture. You can see some of his latest works on his Facebook gallery.
